Wasn't there a cheesy movie named The Core? (A quick jaunt over to IMDB says yes there is, but it apparently wasn't very good. [Also, going to IMDB crashed my browser, so I can't link to it.])
As I mentioned earlier, I've been getting stitches in my side when I run. I not only learned that breathing more deeply and more regularly can make it better, but that stronger abdominal muscles can prevent them in the first place.
I dug out my copy of Run Like A Mother, because I have distinct memories of them talking about strength building and what's known as your core (your abdominal and lower back muscles). Sure enough, they said the same thing: stronger tummy muscles will make you a faster, better runner. They didn't mention stitches in your side, though. I can only assume that's part of what they meant. So I got out of bed yesterday morning, a non-running day, a did some sit-ups and other exercises that will give me a stronger core.
I threw in some push-ups too, for other reasons. And why not?
