Reading: Roma

Roma is perfect for anyone who, like me, is a sucker for all things Ancient Rome. It's a fiction story that takes place over 800 years of history - and it's hard to make it a cohesive story when you have to cover that much ground. Its merits on a storytelling scale maybe aren't very high, but it hits the major highlights of the Roman Republic, and its meditations on how history turns into myth made me think a bit. It's also pretty good at conveying how alien (to us in 2012) and warlike the Ancient Romans were, and how their empire wouldn't have been as great without their war-mongering. And was it even war-mongering? Or was it survival? Life was so much more brutal then. It's hard to tell from 3000 years later.
